Introducing photo-acoustic imaging

Our technology is based on an all-optical fiber sensing approach, where we modify a fiber to emit light at specific locations along the fiber. This light interacts with the tissue, generating ultrasound which we detect with fiber-based hydrophones. The signals are converted to detailed tissue images.

APPLICATIONS

First application

Problem

Of all patients undergoing a stent placement to treat cardiovascular disease, yearly ca. 500,000 experience complications ranging from heart attacks to death. This is primarily a result of surgeons having insufficient information available from current imaging techniques regarding the position, thickness and type of deposits on the artery walls to optimally place the stents. As a result, ca. 100,000 stent placement procedures have to be repeated every year.

Solution

We overcome the limitations of traditional intravascular imaging by introducing intravascular photoacoustic imaging, which offers a multispectral view ("seeing in color") of blood vessels. This advanced imaging minimizes complications during procedures, such as stent misplacement, by ensuring optimal positioning on the first attempt. This not only improves patient outcomes but also reduces post-procedure complications and the need for additional interventions.
